Camp Anglewood day camp is located in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.
Our camp has provided a classic camping experience for children ages 4 to 12 since 1952. Our unique Pocono like setting includes
a lake, a small brook, woods, hills, and a creek. Camp facilities include cabins, a large swimming pool, basketball courts,
an arts & crafts center, a game room, an archery range, and a sports field.
Our summer program runs for eight weeks, usually from the last week in June through the second week in August. Campers usually
attend the full eight weeks, but partial season attendance, on a per week basis, is also possible. Camp Anglewood takes a
traditional approach to the summer camping experience, starting with a Red Cross swimming program and mixing in classic camp
activities with various sports. We organize these activities with a very experienced staff of mostly teaches so that every
day is unique. Then add special events like bar-b-ques, talent shows and educational visits by animal experts and others.
Finally, place all this fun in a truly Pocono-like mountain setting and you begin to see the Anglewood experience. Our campers
go home every day tired and full of stories about their camp day.
Our campers
are organized into groups of up to 12 campers (less for younger
campers). These groups are organized into three camp sections: Lower, Middle, and Upper Camps. This allows activities tailored
to campers of similar age, athletic ability, and social environment. Total enrollment is approximately 175 to 200 campers.
Since camp is fully subscribed each year, it is advisable, especially for new campers, to sign-up in the fall. Discounts go
to early Fall applications.
Camp Anglewood has virtually no turnover in staff.
Our dedicated counselors are
teachers and college students with education and sports backgrounds. The younger groups are assigned a head counselor and
an assistant while the older groups have only a counselor. Each major area/activity has a dedicated counselor and at least
one assistant (the pool having the most with several life guards). This insures the ratio of staff to camper is as low as
possible.
Camp Anglewood provides lunch drinks for all campers. Brown bag lunches
from home are the norm. Wednesdays involve hotdogs and hamburgers from home which are then cooked on the camp grill during
our Bar-B-Que lunch.
Our large 60 x 40 Ft pool accommodates several swim groups of different skill
levels each period. Instruction is given for beginning, intermediate, and advanced swimmers. Campers are evaluated at the
beginning of camp and throughout the season to insure that they are placed into the appropriate skill group. All lessons follow
American Red Cross standards and teaching programs are administered by certified lifeguards. Towels are provided.
The lake is Camp Anglewood's pride and joy. The 2003 Season saw the completion
and first use of the newly renovated lake. It is stocked with fish that have been very cooperative giving children immense
joy fishing them out of the lake with barb-less hooks. The paddleboat, rowboat, and kayaks are in constant demand.
A tournament is held each week in one of the camp's activities including archery, kayaking,
home run derby, foul shooting, and Gockey. The most popular is the annual ping pong tournament. Contestants are divided into
age groups (Lower, Middle, and Upper Campers) to equalize skill levels. Prizes go to the best dressed on Red, White, &
Blue Day. Friday Game Days include special team events, tug-of-war, and lots of Capture-The-Flag. We also have Water Day,
Backwards Day, and Parents Invitation Days. During the 6th or 7th week, the whole camp is divided
into two teams which compete in various events all week within the Lower, Middle, and Upper Camp groups. The event ends
on Friday with the Anglecross relay races and a talent show.
Basketball is very popular at Anglewood. Our in-house league culminates with the All-Star and Championship games. Soccer,
baseball, and Frisbee are also popular at Anglewood. Campers of varying skill levels play in the in-house leagues or just
kick and throw the ball around. Fun games help everyone brush up on their skills.
Various
craft projects include boats to race in the creek, gimp key chains, and custom T-shirts to promote the camp basketball and
soccer teams. Each camper can custom Tie Dye a T-shirt.
